Has anyone here had any experience with Ukraine / russian handheld electronic translator? They run about $500.00 so i'm wondering if its better just to throw the money at a local???? This was the model i was looking at: ECTACO Partner ER-X5

Navarre--look at e-bay. I have just looked myself, and there are a wide range of translators to be had for a wide range of prices. A specific translator with a million word capacity--that also speaks to you, will cost about 200 dollars. One with a word cap of 200,000--about 50 -70 dollars, and most likely it will have several languages on it.

You guys misunderstood me. The price is not in question or flexible. If you want one that does entire sentences and is by-directional they are expensive. Because Russia and Ukraine have different symbols on their keyboard this one requires both keyfboards to be bi-directional. Does anyone FROM Russia or Ukraine have any experiencve with hand held translators? Do they work?

Okay-now you are talking about a different animal. It is called a "phraselator",and you buy the specific language card as an accessory. You can also find these on ebay--and you are right,Navarre, they are about 500 dollars!! Other translators have plenty of conversational phrasing however, and many also show the phrasing in the symbols of the countries alphabet. Even Arabic and Japanese. These are commonly 50-150 dollars. Consider this though. You can get the software for your laptop computer, and the sticky labels for the keys on the keyboard. Many programs also give you an english-based pronunciation. I doubt you get much info from the natives, because this expensive toy will cost almost a years wages.

I have seen the Ectaco website now,but this seems ridiculously expensive. There are also the Lingo and Franklin brands which seem just fine-especially if you do not need the world time clock and appointment calendar ( as some businessman probably would )

I have used the Ectaco EGR430T, English-German-Russian Talking Electronic Dictionary and find it to be a fine product, with many useful phrases. I forget what I paid for it, maybe $150. How about the online translators, if you know some of the language you can detect the errors they make?
Many Ukrainians are anxious to try out their English, if you can make it through the heavily inflected accent, charming in the female of the species, disastrous in the male.
We have some Ukrainian women on the site who seem to do well in expressing themselves without too much formal training, some of them saying a hell of lot more than they should, but then that goes with the female birthright perhaps.
I grew up in New York near a Ukrainian neighborhood. You knew you were there when you could smell the kapustu cooking. Those lovely girls had no time for us Micks, wrong church. The guys played football with us and were like battleships, no matter what their size.

John thanks for input, Is the EGR 430 bi directional? I mean i will be in ukraine for a month of oct nov and want something that i can pass to my better half and allow her to speak to me or as you said "express herself" I want the one with the feature/option that does not allow them to say more than they should. Is that an option.

Well, Navarre,
I use a Partner X5 by Ectaco, the Russian to English, and back is as good or better than the online numbers, and ya can put it your pocket.
But for serious translation I use the downloadable verson with so I can see if it sounds right.

Andy thx Is the feature that allows you to translate a sentence at a time a plus or marketing ploy? Best of luck with your trip. Perhaps when you get back you can give me some tips, what to avoid, that sort of thing.

Navarre, It will do paragraf, but as with most translaters, spelling must be correct, and this one has large data base, with spell checker, Ohh and have not found "any" Ukrainian" ladies that cannot speak Russian (laugh),
don't try Ukrainian, it is close but just enough difference to screw ya up (lol). My thoughts anyway.

Then again - maybe not! :P

Navarre,
I only, leave the laptop in my apartment, most of the ones you will rent have "dead bolts" I use it for serious conversation, at the apartment.
The little hand held, I take with me where ever I go, in resturants it comes in handy for asking her what she want's and her telling you what you are ordering, and so on (da).

Navarre,
The apartment thing was always handled, by the people I knew there, I could give you a number to call but she usually, makes her money setting you up with her dateing service, she has offered to do it for me, but I have friend from Los Angles, who has agency in Kiev, Peters Burg, Odesa, and Dnepropetrovsk. I will be talking to the one on Kive before I leave (13th), and I'll ask her what she would charge you to find you an apartment. It is much better than Hotel, and less expencive. Somewere around 60 to 120 USD, depending on how plush you want, I usally go fo 80/90, last time I had two bedroom, kitichen, living room two bath with TV for 90, but it was not on main street, was about 2400 feet uphill from Freedom Sq.
let me know
