Don't take a taxi from an airport :)
Seriousely, they rise the price some times more when realise that you are a foreigner.

Main expenses are tickets and accomodation. Maybe it worths to rent an appartment, not a hotel. Tickets have also different prices depending on a season, company and arriving/departure places. I think it's cheaper to fly to Moscow than to St. Petersburg in all cases. I also think that filghts from the USA can be less expensive. I remember Finnair offered flights from St. Pete to New York for just $400. But it's the price of comfort if you loose more time on a trip. I do not know any other ways. Maybe you will tell us later from your own experience? ;)
