Is there anyone who would disagree with my opinion that the greatest music of the 20th century was the music of Russia? Do you think that the fact that Russia was repressed and miserable during most of the period inspired the great musical art? Music reaches deepest into the emotions, and it is very hard to prove treason when one writes music, even if the Stalinists tried to do it. Pictorial art was another matter, and so Russian art suffered, although I think there has been a resurgence of pictorial art.
Russia has much to contribute to the world but first it must conquer Alcohol, and make it possible for women to have more influence.
Of course I include the Ukraine, which produced some of the greatest musicians of the time.

Dear Olga,
Thank you for your opinion, but that is not enough. You should specify what music is better. You are quite young and so you may refer to pop or rock music, while I was referring to serious music, not that I don't like pop, especially Latino, and good rock 'n roll going back to Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones (who gather no moss). The famous rock 'n roller Jerry Lee Lewis just completed a tour in Russia, probably depleting the supply of vodka along the way.
Who is the young Russian singer? Zemfira? I don't know too much about her. Is she good? Do you and your friends like her?
I really like all good music, emphasis on good. So that includes country western, jazz, pop, rock 'n roll, and pretty ballads with good tunes. That leaves me off short of heavy metal, hard rock, rap, disco and a few other mongrel types.
What do you think, Olya? V dobry chas! Vanya

OK. Well, I agree that classical Russian music is wonderful, especially Rahmaninov, Tchakovski (sorry for spelling, I know their names only in Russian). I play the guitar a little, I play classical music. I like to play Russian music, but foreign music is also very beautiful. One can't say that music of one country better than music of another. All countries have a lot of wonderful and talented composers. I like Spanish music very much. As for Zemphira, I don't like her much, to tell the truth I don't like her at all. Her texts are not very deep. And music also. I listen to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, The Beatles, ABBA, Sting, Queen and many others. As for Russian modern music, I don't listen to it at all.

Dorogaya Olga, Classical guitar music is wonderful, so you must know some by Villa-Lobos, and the Venezuelan guitar waltzes, and all the Spanish gypsy music, and maybe Bach, too. But please allow me to say what I think is better than others, that is, what pleases me more than others. Can't I say that Beethoven is better than almost anyone else? We are always making value judgements and they are important.
I remember a beautiful evening I spent listening to Julian Bream here in Boston.
Don't worry about your spelling, your English is great! In a few years computers will be doing all the spelling

About computers, I agree with you. Well, every person has his/her own opinion. You think that Russian music is the most wonderful. Well, great!!! As for me, I like all music that touches my soul and my feelings. I can't say that I'm a specialist in music. I studied playing guitar for about two years. I played very hard compositions at the firtst year of my education. My teacher told me that I have a talent and must continue my education, but I've chosen different way in life. I've entered Tver University and study literature and Russian language. I like to read classical Russian literature. It's wonderful!!!

Let me please, to join your discussion…
I play piano myself and adore classical music. It seems to me that music doesn’t know any nationality…how can I tell that compositions by Rahmaninoff, Shostakovich or Tchaikovsky are better then music by Beethoven, Chopin, Bach, Strauss, Vivaldy, Shuman …All the great composers’ music have been proven to effect the listener in a
positive way, for intelligence, calming, good mood, spiritual reflection.
I adore the 2nd Piano Concerto of Rachmaninoff , 7th symphony by Shostakovich and so great music by Tchaikovsky from ballet “ Swan Lake”.
But when I play piano Moonlight sonata by Beethoven, or Chopin nocturnes I feel as this divine music makes me simply forget about reality and sink completely into the world of beautiful sounds. It’s so great way to relax and feel myself full of energy again…
I think that composer, when he creates music, he includes in his creation some spirit which can have such great beneficial influence on person …and this influence really is a great power, which makes feel so deep emotions. And much I think depends on the depth of nature of this person and ability to feel, what composer wanted to express with his music.

Hi everyone amateur of the music!
I wholly and ???????? agree that it is impossible speak - a music of one folk good but the other bad. The Best making the music culture of any folk fall into golden fund of the world music culture. And absolutely not it is important, what music direction belongs to this product - serious classical, more light operetta, jazz, rock or disco.
I like the organ music. But realy can anyone to leave the indifferent music to ballet "Nutcracker sweet"? But aria of the Spectre from opera "Spectre of the opera"?
I love the waltzs and operettas Strauss, operettas Imre Kaliman. But variety music 60 - 80-h years? The Beatles, Roling Stounz, Pink Floid, Queen, Smokki, Space, ABBA, Boni M, Skorpions, orchestra of the Paul Maria, Din Rid, Joe Dossen, Demis Rusos, Hulio Iglessias, Sting, Karel Goth with his "honey" voice and many other. To my mind little in the world to find the people, not knowing, what is a "Hotel "California" or "Flight of the Condor". But after all this music not Russia, but who can speak - this music bad? Nobody!
The Russian music I too much love. But not modern variety, but variety music USSR same 60 - 80-h. When on bandstand was important to singer has the voice and soul, for good canto needs was a beautiful tune and good deep text. Shall Not enumerate all performers - from plenty of. I love these canto in original performance only. Now, many modern "singer" take the old canto try to perform them in new ???????????. But on my glance this looks like pirate copy with pirate copy. From canto is done show, but gets lost the soul a canto.
