His name was originally Isadore Baline and he came to America from Tyumen, Siberia with his poor family. He had to scramble for money as a kid, but later on he wrote "God Bless America", almost our national anthem. He loved immigrant people and also wrote the beautiful "Russian Lullaby" and "Marie from Sunny Italy". Once at the Academy Award ceremonies he had to open the envelope only to call out his own name as the winner.
His songs were so simple that anyone could sing them, yet he never could read music or play the piano very well.
He died in the city he loved, New York, at the age of 101.
